Masayuki Uchiyama (内山 まさゆき; 1952 - August 31, 2010) was an anime animation supervisor and key animation artist. He was known for his stiff line and its large number of works.
Biography[]
Masayuki Uchiyama was born in 1952. He began his career in 1969, starting at Neo Media Studios. There, he studied under Keiichiro Kimura and worked for a few projects. After leaving Neo Media Studios, he worked as a freelance animator before joining Studio Z along with Yoshinori Kanada (another animator formed at Neo Media Studios and one of his best friends). Masayuki later helped establish the animation studio Last House, where he became the main animator.
In the 1980s and 1990s, he was mainly involved with Toei Animation's works, in particular with the anime adaptations of Akira Toriyama's manga series. He went on to be a key animator for Dr. Slump and the first three Dragon Ball movies, and an animation director for various episodes of Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and Dragon Ball GT; being part of the animation director rotation. Masayuki Uchiyama is the animator who has directed the more Dragon Ball franchise episodes, serving 71 times as animation director for Dragon Ball Z.
He was also an animation director for Daikū Maryū Gaiking, Don Dracula, Ginga Tetsudo 999, Hajime Ningen Gyatoruz, The Kabocha Wine, Kindaichi Shounen no Jikenbo, Mahou no Angel Sweet Mint, Yu-Gi-Oh!. He also worked on Attack No. 1, Uchū Senkan Yamato, Galaxy Express 999, Wakusei Robo Danguard Ace, Knight of Ramune & 40.
Masayuki abruptly died from a heart failure on August 31, 2010, at the age of 58.
